I believe he's referring to the depth of the probe itself, not the depth of the threaded fitting. From the pics it appears to be an adjustable-depth sensor, if you loosen the outer nut you should be able to slide the probe itself with respect to the threaded fitting and set the tip depth. IMO what you show is over-exposed and will likely fail prematurely (as in the tip fractures and falls into the turbo). If I recall correctly you want to set the depth to ~1/4 of the tube cross-section, no more. In your pic the probe tip is at 1/2 of the cross-section.
